After reviewing relevant documentation and conducting a coat check walkthrough, the coat check captain should review, verify, and organize equipment using the rental list.

First, the coat check captain should carefully review the rental list. In this, the coat check captain should attend to details on rented equipment, house equipment, and any additional instructions.

Then, the coat check captain should organize rented equipment for check-in, grouping items by type. This will streamline the process of check-in.

Next, the coat check captain should verify all rental equipment during check-in. This involves ensuring every item is present, functional, and in good condition. This requires documenting and reporting discrepancies immediately.

Below is a description of essential equipment and practices with which the coat check captain should become familiar.

Essential Equipment

The coat check captain should be familiar with the following equipment:

• Pipe and Drape: Structures the coat check area so that guest belongings are out of the view of the guest

  • Alternatives: Screens (often 8’ tall, double or trifold)

• Stanchions: Directs the flow of traffic, reduces congestion, and keeps guests organized in lines

• Tables: Provide the essential workspace for sorting, stacking, and organizing equipment and guest within the sanitation station. There are generally large tables (often 6’ x 30”) and smaller tables (6’ x 18”)

• Linens: Dress tables

• Hangers and Racks: Stores hanging belongings (may be built-in, foldable, or constructable)

  • Hangers should be wood or plastic and durable to manage heavy garments

  • Racks should accommodate around 40 guests

• Coat Check Ticket/Tri-Numbering System: Labels belongings (often with clear tear-away pieces for belongings and the guest)

• Coat Check Signage: Indicates location of the coat check

• Masking Tape: Safely adheres tickets to belongings or hangers (if needed)

• Garbage Cans: Collect waste inside of garbage bags (often 30-gallon or “Slim Jims”)

• Garbage Bags: Hold waste

• Lexans: Collect and separate wet umbrellas
