Administer Setup
After reviewing, verifying, and organizing equipment and conducting a coat check staff meeting, the coat check captain must administer setup of the coat check.
Generally, in every setup of the coat check, the coat check captain should:
Ensure they understand the layout of the coat check (whether coat check closets or rooms, built coat check areas, sectioned coat check areas, or aisle coat checks)
Ensure all equipment is organized for setup, including
Structural equipment like pipes and drapes, screens, and/or tables
Hanging and storage equipment like racks, hangers, and lexans
Waste equipment like garbage cans and garbage bags
Ticketed numbering systems and masking tape
Establish and communicate clear entry points, exit points, desired flows, and divisions between the BOH and FOH coat check staff
Prep and stage the intake area for rapid guest intake (e.g., pre-staging hangers and tickets in numerical order along the receiving table so staff can immediately tag and hang coats upon arrival)
Check that venue signage accurately directs guests to the coat check area
Reinforce signage with stanchions to create a defined path, and (if possible) station a team member at the entrance to greet, direct, and ensure proper access to guests
Confirm the organization or venue’s protocol for managing lost or forgotten items
