Breakdown refers to the stage at the end of a service or event in which service professionals ensure the venue is restored to its original state. Breakdown includes transitioning guests, administering breakdown, and debriefing with the coat check staff.
1.Transition Guests
The coat check captain may assist the service professional team with transitioning lingering guests at the end of the event. They do this by supporting guests as they move from the coat check area to a transportation area, directing guests to pre-arranged transportation (e.g., buses), valet services, and/or paid services (e.g., taxis, Ubers, Lyfts).
2.Administer Breakdown
The coat check captain is responsible for leading the breakdown of the coat check area. This involves:
As a prerequisite, ensuring, throughout the event (i.e., prior to the formal breakdown), that empty racks have been consolidated and broken down.
Identifying and collecting any remaining (i.e., left or forgotten) coats and/or additional items. These items should be given directly to the client. The coat check captain should communicate to the client that they are now responsible for the items.
Documenting remaining coats and/or additional items for inclusion in the captain’s report.
Placing empty hangers in their designated boxes or receptacles.
Packing away remaining equipment (e.g., racks, screens, stanchions, pipe and drapes) and ensuring all rental items are returned by checking the rental list.
Ensuring the area is clean and all items (house and rental) are in their proper location.
3.Debrief with Coat Check Staff
The coat check staff participate in a short post-event debrief to discuss relevant information related to the setup, execution, and breakdown of the event. The coat check captain directs this debrief and solicits feedback through facilitating an open dialogue with the team. The captain documents this feedback, as well as remaining coats and/or additional items given to the client, to include in the post-event review.
